Istanbul, Turkey
In the summer of 2008, I went with a friend to Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. Once in Istanbul, we gorged on baklava and Efes, shopped for spices and earrings, and spent one day across the bridge, in the area of Taksim (where these photos were taken). We tried on glasses that made us look like John Lennon, we drank (or attempted to drink) Turkish coffee, we wandered the cobblestone streets to watch spinning dancers and to purchase numerous pairs of genie pants.
And so, when the same friend offered to meet up with me during my six-month stint in Asia, I got very excited. And I’m even more excited knowing our plan: meet in Singapore, fly to Bangkok for the Chinese New Year, travel to Myanmar for a week, and cap off our time together with nearly two weeks lounging on the beaches of Southern Thailand.
Needless to say, I can’t wait.

A friend of mine is living in Istanbul right now and she’s been telling me so many stories about it….it sounds like one of the most vibrant cities. And such a huge melting pot – she even talks about commuting between Asia and Europe each day (lucky)
Someday!!
I was looking at your pictures, and I couldn’t quite figure out where it was. The first one with the trolley car made me think of Lisbon, then the Space Invader… Makes me want to go to Istanbul all the more! Guess I’ll settle for tagging along to Asia with you!!
Naomi – I think you would love Istanbul! It is definitely one of my favourite cities; you’re right, it is so vibrant and full of life.
Lauren – I hope you get to Istanbul soon! When are you taking off to Asia? Perhaps we’ll bump into each other there!
