New Year’s Resolutions:
– finish my travel writing course
– take Spanish lessons (to become fluent by September of 2013)
– travel through Central and South America for at least six months
– take at least one short holiday in the spring (preferably to Cuba or an island in the Caribbean)
– save a lot (a lot) of money
– become a little bit stronger (planning ahead for hiking)
– read at least forty new books
– have a few more travel articles published
– learn how to play my new harmonium
– be single (travel flings excepted)
Any bets on which one I’m going to break first?? And do you have any resolutions?

PS – you have to do something with all of your gorgeous photography – as i was looking back over your last few posts and the pics – they are stunning and need to be in a book…you need to investigate istock and become a contributor……just sayin’…!!

Okay. I stumbled across your blog after picking up a folded piece of paper that fell out of a Glenfiddich carton I was throwing away. I went to the site because it was about travel, and through that series of rabbit holes, I arrived here!
Let me just say, I’m hooked. I went to Costa Rica for 2 months at the end of 2010 after quitting my job, and ever since then have not been able to get the idea of extended travel out of my head. Like everyone else I imagine, can I ask you how you do it? How do you save the money? And how do you keep yourself sane in between?
I’m thinking of taking another US road trip this year (the last time I did it was in 2003), so I’m looking forward to looking through your archive at your experience! I’m going to try my best to avoid looking at some of your other posts, though — they might make me sick with envy. 🙂
Deirdre – Thank you so much! I would love to do something with my photos but I don’t know what. I am a complete amateur and use a regular camera, so I’m hoping to take photography more seriously in the future. Hmm…another resolution? Happy New Year!
Katie – Wow, how cool! Gotta love those rabbit holes. Extensive travel can really take its toll and I have had to make a lot of sacrifices along the way, but overall I absolutely love my life and recommend it to anyone who is serious about travelling. Saving is definitely hard (and keeping sane is even harder) but I truly believe in the saying ‘where there is a will, there is a way’. As I’ve noted on this blog before, I am also in the fortunate position of not having any student loans or any other people (kids, etc) to support, which, of course, makes it easier. I can be completely selfish. 🙂
I’m glad that you are liking my blog! It’s always so great to have new readers…thanks for your comment!
My resolution is always to read more books than the year before. I failed two years in a row (ouch!) but finally got back on track this year. Good luck with your list!
Thanks, Jill! I know a lot of people try the 52 books a year thing, but I thought 40 was a nice, manageable number. Good luck with your reading, too!
happy new year lepa brenna!!!
